Scrapbooking In The 1960's

Hi Guys,

Here is a post made by Rob at http://utahamicus.blogspot.com that sums up scrapbooking in the 1960's. It demonstrates just how important it is to record those memories so that future generations can experience just what life was like through the eyes of one who was there.

No excuses then...get scrapbooking.

Signs Of The Times: A trip back to 1965 through my mother's eyes

In today's world many of our children's lives are chronicled and documented through the multi-billion dollar industry known as scrapbooking. When I was born you simply purchased a "baby book" and then filled in the lines. The book my mother Judy used is titled, All My Life. The information below is was transcribed from several pages from that book.

My mother's first words after my birth were, "It was supposed to be a girl! He has lots of black hair!" My father's were, "Hows Judy?" Although disappointing mom right from the start may not have been way to enter the world it was the best I could do, and quite frankly, I don't think I would have been a very good daughter, or wife. Luckily my sister Nicole arrived in November of 1969 and with the birth of her perfect child mom was able to forgive me, at least for the time being.

Within this book are my mother's notations of my early life as well as the events that occurred near the time of my arrival in 1965. It is now old and falling apart, but it still treasured, and I enjoy looking back to see how my mother saw the world back then.

Enjoy the trip!

The Headlines:
World - Trouble in Far Eastern Vietnam, Civil Rights Movement in Southern and Eastern States.
Local - Utah's local Democratic Party in Trouble with (Bad Boys) in Salt Lake County Government (A Grand Jury was called in May of 1965).

The President was Lyndon Baines Johnson
The Governor of Utah was Calvin L. Rampton
The Mayor of Salt Lake City was J. Bracken Lee
My father Michael T. Miller was a news reporter and photographer at KUTV Channel 2 (The book didn't ask about Mother's occupation).

Famous Names

In Entertainment were Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Peter O' Toole, Richard Burton.

In Sports were Don Schollander (4 Gold Medals), Utah State University All American, Wayne Estes, Craig Breedlove.

In World Events were Charles de Gaulle, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Ralph Bunche.

Others of Note: John Fitzgerald Kennedy (assassinated 1964), Adlai Stevenson.

The Best Selling Book: Mary McCarthy's, "The Group".

Popular Songs were Downtown, King of the Road, Girl from Ipanema.

The Popular Dance was, The Surf, The Swim, The Watusi, The Pony Jerk, The Clam, The Frug.

The Fashions were: Short skirts, Ruffle or Tom Jones Blouses.

The Most Advanced Cars were Avanti, Barracuda, Corvette.

The Most advanced Home Appliances were Hair Dryers and Electric Knives.

Thanks Mom.

Super Snow Layout

I'm sure that lots of you have photos and memories of - dare I say it - snow that could be scrapbooked. (What makes you think that I don't like snow?)

Here is a layout idea posted by Lisa Andrews in http://scrapbooking.families.com/blog that may inspire you. I liked the clever use of different paper to lead the eye around the page and the blue title lettering and photo edging. The thing I am not too keen on is the overlapping of photos, but like everything else in scrapbooking layouts, it is a personal view.

Happy scrapbooking.

Layout Deconstructed

It seems that we as scrapbookers like to be on the lookout for a new technique or idea to add to a layout, so I thought that I would start a weekly article called "Layout Deconstructed" where I will break down the details of a layout. This will hopefully help you notice some subtle (or maybe not so subtle) techniques you could apply to your own layouts.
So, let's get started with the week 1 layout: Snow.

Paper Selection. At first this may appear to be a random mix of paper and not something that you would choose to put together. I think that it works well together because I choose paper with different patterns: stripes, small dots and a graphic pattern. The different patterns compliment each other and cause the eye to move around the page in a triangular motion which allows the viewer to look at all of the pictures. The papers have the same color of blue in each of them, which brings continuity to the page.

Photo Layout. Here I chose to slightly overlap the photos in the layout and which created a collage effect. I like how the eye can easily move from one picture to the next because the pictures simply flow into one another.

The Title. I decided to use a fairly large title that overlapped some of the pictures. The blue on the letters is the same blue that is in the paper. This helped to give the layout a uniform look. I created a subtitle by writing on the backside of one of the patterned papers. This is a great way to insure that the colors will match.

Special Touches. I added a little blue paint around the edges of each of the photos. I thought that this helped convey the cold feeling of snow and was also a little messy just like snow.

This layout was very simple and could easily be scraplifted in no time. Hope that you will be able to pick up something you want to try on your next layout!

Thought you guys might like the following piece written by Kim Bolyard who is a 2007 design team member at http://www.scrapbooks.com/blog/index.php

'Do you have a certain scrapbook style? Today I wanted to talk about different scrapbook styles and what that means as a scrapbooker. Many of us of been scrapbooking for years and have seen the world of scrapbooking evolve into this huge industry with thousands of products available at our finger tips. I myself have changed my style of scrapbooking throughout the years. I even change from week to week depending on what inspires me.

The important elements of a scrapbook page should be a title, photos, journaling and of course your own style. It is the look, the feel and the mood that demonstrates a scrapbook style. We are individuals that have developed our own styles. Find what works for you .

Here are a few examples of styles that I see right now:

Clean and Simple, which is exactly that. This tends to come from a more graphic design prospective. You have to think minimalist. The layout has straight lines and a minimum of embellishments
.

Another very popular style right now is Freestyle. This being the polar opposite of Clean and Simple has taken the scrapbooking world by storm. Remember to think out side the box if this is your style. No rules-no boundaries. These pages are eclectic and artistic.

Let's not forget Trendy. Just like the fashion industry, which I feel drives this style, is the latest and greatest products. I don't know about you but I tend to go with what is hot in the market. Trendy does not only mean the products that you are using, but also what the latest techniques may be.

You can also throw some shabby chic in there and you have a well rounded mix of styles to chose from.

Scrapbooking allows you to experiment with the latest trends, colors, and techniques. Remember there is no right or wrong way to scrapbook. The important thing is to enjoy this wonderful hobby and keep stretching your mind and creativity. Always be true to yourself, and if you like your style and what you are creating that is all that matters.

To quote Ali Edwards "I believe style is a continual evolution. That it is constantly changing and growing. I love the idea that it is wonderfully perfect to have a style which is in motion. That ebbs and flows and never has to stay the same."

Discover Your Artistic Skills - Create A Digital Scrapbook!

Digital scrapbooking is the use of computer technology instead of traditional scrapbook cutting and sticking. If computing is one your skills, then a digital scrapbook could be for you.

How many times have you been unable to find that precious baby photo you so carefully stored on your computer? The very one that would make your scrapbook album just that little extra special. Think of all those hours of frustrating searching through a hodgepodge of photo files when you have forgotten which name or number you saved it under. Perhaps it is amongst all those boxes of loose photos prints you have stored in the spare room.

Digital scrapbooking could be the solution to your organization problems. Creating a digital scrapbook using photo or image-editing software will make it easy to find your photos just when you want to see them.

You don’t have to print your digital photos and so save on photo shop or ink and paper costs.

Digital scrapbooking software will help you enhance and arrange your photos on digital scrapbooking pages. You can introduce digital frames, borders and graphics etc. to artistically create your scrapbook album. Journaling can be added also to highlight and preserve your memories. Any hard copies of photos or memorabilia can be scanned and saved to your computer.

You can reduce your scrapbook supply items and save money.

Digital scrapbooking software means scrapbook paper, glue, scissors, stickers and all the other scrapbook supplies are no longer necessary. The software packages include templates, photo enhancing tools for cropping etc., fonts and other embellishments to aid in your journaling and decorating. In fact, everything you need to create your digital scrapbook.

Storage space for your scrapbook albums is reduced.

Traditional scrapbooking albums and supplies do take up space whereas with digital scrapbooking, everything is stored on your computer.

Never lose any of your irreplaceable photos and memorabilia again.

You can back-up your digital scrapbooks by using an archiving program to compress large files, enabling them to be stored on a CD or other removable disk.

What if you want to show your digital scrapbook to others?

Unlike traditional scrapbooks, digital scrapbooking allows you to send your scrapbook albums to friends or relatives via your email network or save them on a CD or a DVD and give them as presents.

What digital scrapbooking software should you use?

There are various software packages available from a basic kit for beginners to a ‘bells and whistle’ kit for the more advanced computer user. It is a matter of seeing what the different packages have to offer, deciding if the features are what you require and if the price is right.

What are the benefits of digital scrapbooking?

As previously mentioned, it saves money on your scrapbook supply consumables. Once bought, it can be used forever.

Digital scrapbooking saves space by storing your albums in files. Even if you print the scrapbook album, they have less bulk.

Digital generated scrapbook albums are safe from fading and deterioration. You can have multiple back-up copies also.

Copies can be easily sent to others.

Less time. Once you have mastered the digital scrapbooking software, you will be able create your scrapbook albums relatively quickly.

If you enjoy using a computer, then digital scrapbooking may just enhance further your pleasure of scrapbooking.

Need To Create A Scrapbook Album Easily? You Can With A Scrapbook Kit!

Are you finding it difficult to get started on your scrapbook album?

Are all the scrapbooking products available making you feel overwhelmed?

Then make it easier for yourself and grab yourself a scrapbooking kit. There is a lot of choice in scrapbook kits nowadays to suit ‘scrappers’ from beginners to experienced ones.

Scrapbook kits are ‘themed,’ they are a complete package, so that they include products that ‘work well’ together. All the paper, embellishments etc, are co-ordinated into the chosen theme. You know that your finished scrapbook album will look good.

Mostly, scrapbook kits come with examples to give you inspiration so that you can either adapt and create your own pages, or follow the set pieces.

Who are scrapbooking kits aimed at?

Beginners are an obvious target because they remove the necessity of choosing your own scrapbook products and therefore prevent the risk of getting the co-ordination wrong. To save time on the selection process, experienced ‘scrappers’ will very often use scrapbooking kits.

What degree of difficulty will you find with scrapbook kits?

Some manufacturers produce scrapbook kits in different skill levels, from beginners to intermediates and on to advanced. It is a matter of pitching your skill level to the scrapbooking kit.

What themes are available in scrapbook kits?

There are scrapbook kits to suit every occasion from birthdays and anniversaries to vacations.

Will a scrapbooking kit cost you more than buying scrapbook products separately?

Very often scrapbook embellishments come in packs of a certain quantity so that you may have to purchase more than you actually need for your project. Scrapbook kits contain just enough for each page and so save you overspending to complete one scrapbook album.

Of course, having scrapbook products left over enables you to start building up stocks in readiness for future scrapbook albums.

What will you get in a scrapbook kit?

A typical scrapbooking kit will contain the basic items to complete your project. These may include:

• A scrapbook album
• Papers that have your chosen theme
• Stickers
• Cardstocks
• Die cuts
• Adhesives
• Scissors
• Ink stamps
• Embellishments
• Pens and pencils
• Punchers
• And more.

They will all be co-ordinated to fit in with your chosen theme.

Are you obliged to use all of the included scrapbook products?

You can use as many or as little of the inclusive items as you wish. You can deviate from any included plan as much as you wish. There is nothing to prevent you from using your own scrapbook products to enhance those in the scrapbook kit and employing your artistic talents to be even more creative.

If you did opt to use extra scrapbook items, the inclusive scrapbook kit products would give you clues to what would be suitable to keep your scrapbook theme co-ordinated.

What are the advantages of using a scrapbook kit?

Obviously, for the novice, a scrapbook kit is a tremendous aid in theme design and co-ordination.

It keeps costs down by not having to purchase unnecessary scrapbook products.

A scrapbook kit saves time by not having to design a theme and source appropriate items.

Scrapbook kits are not every ‘scrappers’ choice, but they are a choice if they fill your requirements. Whether you choose a scrapbook kit or not...get scrapbooking.

More Tips To Improve Your Scrapbook With Stickers

After many devoted hours, you have assembled your precious photos and memorabilia and arranged them artistically on your scrapbooking pages. You sit back and look at them carefully. You think to yourself, ‘they look great, but...they need a little extra something…of course, scrapbook stickers!’

What can scrapbook stickers do for your scrapbook pages?

Scrapbooking stickers can help to transform your great looking scrapbook pages into scrapbook pages that have that ‘WOW’ factor. Just by using scrapbook stickers, your scrapbook pages can miraculously change to something special…artistically special. There is a huge selection of scrapbook stickers available for every occasion and they are relatively inexpensive.

Prevent damage to your memorabilia by purchasing the right sort of scrapbook stickers.

Before indulging yourself in this virtual ‘Treasure House’ of scrapbooking stickers however, make certain that the scrapbook stickers that you buy are acid and lignin free to help prevent yellowing and damage with age.

What can you use scrapbooking stickers for?

One of the main uses for scrapbook stickers is as a border. This could be either around the edge of your scrapbook page or around your photos or items of memorabilia. There are many themed scrapbook stickers that are ready made for you to use.

If you find difficulty in laying the border down straight, instead of applying it direct to the background paper, mount in on cardstock first. Then, cut round the scrapbooking stickers and mount it on the page as you would a cut out.

You could use scrapbook stickers to fix photos and memorabilia in place. Try scrapbook stickers that enhance the theme of the page.

There is a huge range of alphabet scrapbooking stickers available that you could use to create artistic titles for your scrapbook pages. Word stickers can be employed for journaling.

Apply scrapbook stickers to pre-made tags and use as scrapbooking page embellishments.

Scrapbooking stickers are excellent for decoration and emphasizing a theme. Examples of this are using scrapbook stickers of footballs, baseballs etc. on scrapbook pages that have a sports theme. Glitter stickers, dress stickers, high heel stickers etc. would emphasize scrapbooking pages with a theme of a party or prom.

If you desired to include bullet points for emphasis, then scrapbook stickers could be used.

Are there any special fun type scrapbook stickers that you could use?

There are many varieties of this category of scrapbooking sticker available. It pays for you to look around and see what is available that would enhance your scrapbook pages. Some of these are of a layered type that produces a kind of 3D appearance.

• Thin wooden scrapbook stickers that you can paint or decorate.
• Rubber scrapbook stickers.
• Quilted scrapbook stickers.
• Vellum scrapbook stickers have a translucent quality to them.
• Crystal and epoxy scrapbook stickers have a raised layer over them.

Remember to use scrapbook stickers to enhance your scrapbook pages and not detract away from your photos and memories, so be careful.

As you can see, there is a vast variety of scrapbooking stickers available to enable you to use your artistic talents to enhance your scrapbook pages to make them just that bit different.

Your scrapbook album is a record of your precious memories, scrapbook stickers can make even more precious.

What You Need To Know About Scrapbook Paper

Use acid and lignin free scrapbooking paper only.

If the lignin, a natural chemical in paper, is not removed during the scrapbook paper processing, yellowing and deterioration follows. By using acid and lignin free scrapbook paper, you can secure a sustained life span for you treasured photos and memorabilia. This sort of scrapbook paper comes in an assortment of textures and colors.

Beautify your scrapbook album by using specialist scrapbook paper.

Since there are numerous types of specialist scrapbooking paper available, you can build in lots of enthusiasm to your photos by using tasteful colors and textures as a background.

What sorts of specialist scrapbooking papers are there?

Vellum is one that comes in an assortment of colors and is translucent. You can buy it in a sort of ‘foggy,’ so called clear variety and with patterns such as ‘marbled. ’

Its translucent nature affords an intriguing illusion to anything placed beneath. Therefore it is superb for creating a ‘see through’ composition. An illustration of this is placing a photo beneath vellum and making it materialize like looking through a window.

Just envisage the fabulous effects that you could invent using vellum.

Another specialist scrapbook paper is silk wrapping paper. This scrapbook paper is just sensational to touch. It’s luxurious quality and texture is the outcome of the strands of silk that run through this paper.

The tasteful texture of this scrapbooking paper makes it a must for that romantic recollection.

Hankering a scrapbook paper that gives that ‘torn’ look?

Mulberry paper is a fibrous material that probably looks its greatest when torn. If you sketch your master on the paper with water, you can ease the fibers apart and obtain a superb appearance.

Make that layout truly outstanding.

To add exquisite images to your venture, you could use screen - print scrapbooking paper. Take advantage of the super designs to produce that special scrapbook album. It can be expensive and hard to locate but, well worth it.

How would you like to design your own scrapbook paper?

This is simple to do. Find the design that you want to use and scan it into your computer. Now, print it out on plain acid and lignin free scrapbook paper. Hey presto! You have created your very own scrapbooking paper.

Here is a couple of ways to use scrapbook paper to create something different without costing big bucks.

Using cardstock or textured paper, tear the edges or corners to yield jagged edges. This gives an impressive finish that looks striking. A design can firstly be traced with water if appropriate.

Explore crumpling scrapbook paper to produce embellishments or maybe green paper for bushes etc. A novel idea I read recently to build a special effect background paper is to crumple the paper, lightly spray with water, crumple for a second time, flatten out and iron it.

Whatever scrapbook paper you use, always appraise the look it gives with your photos and memorabilia before making any permanent fixtures. You are judge as what looks good in your scrapbook album so just enjoy it.

Scrapbooking your favorite memories is fast becoming one of the most interesting and popular hobbies that you can take up. With scrapbook supply now a multi-billion dollar industry, it’s hardly surprising that its popularity has even surpassed golf.

So, what is scrapbooking? Scrapbooking involves compiling photographs, magazine and newspaper articles and clippings, and other memorabilia into artistically decorated albums.

It’s tremendous growth rate has resulted in ‘scrapbookers’ getting together at each other’s homes, local scrapbook supply stores, scrapbooking conventions and even cruises. As well as being social events, these gatherings enable the sharing of tips and ideas.

Keeping pictures of events in life is one way to keep those memories alive. Happy moments and special occasions such as vacations, birthdays, graduations, weddings, and many other occasions are very often captured in photographs. Furthermore, such photos keep the memory of the event alive, and enable others a brief insight of the scene and to share some of the emotion surrounding them.

Other items that you could include are: love letters, cards, restaurant menus, concert tickets and programs and dried flowers. The list is endless. Anything that is a part of your past or present life is suitable.

Before starting your scrapbook, assemble all the pictures that you want to include in your work. Next, sort them into date order. Before actually inserting the photos, set out all the materials including the captions that you are going to use, in the sequence they will appear in the scrapbook. Don’t forget to occasionally, add in artistic embellishments to personalize and decorate the pages. These embellishments could consist of stickers, trinkets, die cuts and fancy lettering. Do this all throughout the pages of the scrapbook.

When reliving the events surrounding your photos, you may perhaps recall some funny or memorable incident. Include these to make the caption more expressive and alive.

Colors also play a great role in your scrapbook. Softer colors such as cream and blue or silver and gold are mostly used. These colors make the pages of the scrapbook more attractive and lively.

More Tips To Improve Your Scrapbook Layout

Are you struggling to come up with a scrapbook layout for your project?

It can be very frustrating when every scrapbook layout you try just does not seem to work.

First of all, it is worth taking your time when designing a scrapbooking layout because page appearance will make a difference to your finished scrapbook album.

Your scrapbook layout is really a personal preference so you can let your imagination be your creator. Try arranging your photos, memorabilia, journaling and embellishments on the page size you have chosen and see how they look. Move them around into different positions to try all combinations.

Consider using sketches to help you fit your memorabilia and embellishments on the page.

Lots of different layouts for various scrapbook page sizes can be found online and in scrapbooking magazines. It’s worth studying other people’s work too as you can see if their layouts and color combinations would work for you.

Keep your scrapbook layout simple. Just use two or three colors of paper and once you have decided on a style of frames and borders, keep them throughout.

For scrapbook pages, you could select scrapbooking paper that is color coordinated or scrapbook paper that has a background depicting your chosen theme.

Place your scrapbooking photos and memorabilia on the scrapbook page and see how they look. Try moving them around to different positions until you are satisfied. You may want to ‘crop’ your photos if they have irrelevant space around the main subject. Offer a frame to your photos, add stickers and embellishments, but don’t attach them until you are satisfied with the final appearance.

Remember to leave enough space in your scrapbook layout to enable you to insert your descriptions and notes. Journaling makes the scrapbook pages ‘come alive’ by adding your thoughts and emotions to the photos and memorabilia.

Make sure that the scrapbook page depicts the mood that you are trying to create.

Take the guesswork out of coordinating your scrapbook pages, by using a scrapbooking kit.

A scrapbook kit includes everything you might need such as stencils, frames and scrapbook paper, matched on a theme. A scrapbook kit saves you having to choose and purchase all your required materials separately. There are quite a variety of scrapbooking theme kits available especially for special occasions like birthdays and weddings.

Another way of designing a scrapbooking layout is to use your computer.

Digital scrapbooking as it is called is the use of graphics software to create layouts. This dedicated scrapbooking software contains many different layouts, usually geared towards themes, that you can use. The scrapbook paper, scrapbook stickers and all the other embellishments are coordinated to the particular theme that you have chosen.

You can then scan in your photos and other memorabilia and insert them onto the scrapbook pages. All the embellishments can be added to enhance the memorabilia and you know that it is all coordinated. Finally, your journaling can be inserted to finish the scrapbook album off.

Your layouts can be stored on your computer, shared online with others, or printed out. When printed out, digital scrapbook layouts look similar to the traditional ones.

Whatever method you decide on to create your scrapbook layout, you will have the freedom to be able to use your artistic talents and experiment with different looks.

By adding your personal touch to your scrapbook layout you can have real fun.

Are You At Risk Of A Scrapbook Supply Excess?

How can you keep your scrapbook supply items to a minimum and so bring down the costs of this engrossing hobby?

That’s simple! Just purchase the basics and avoid buying too much equipment to begin with. You can always add to your scrapbooking supply as and when you need more. This way will help you to keep the costs down.

With the nation going scrapbooking crazy nowadays, it’s only natural that you would like to have a go too. But what scrapbook supplies do you actually need to product a scrapbook album?

Of course, with so many scrapbooking supplies on sale, it can be a bit daunting for new scrapbookers to know exactly where to start!

Well, you’re in luck because finding a scrapbook supply has been made really easy these days with the huge variety of products available online. Whether it’s a scrapbook album, scrapbook paper or embellishments, the internet can be a great place to purchase your scrapbook supplies. Beginner or experienced, there will be an online scrapbook store with all of the scrapbooking accessories and equipment to help you put your creative ideas into practice.

So what are the basic items that you will need to start your very first scrapbook?

  • Photographs and memorabilia – all compiled in sequence. These being the main items in your scrap book, they determine the theme for your page, and what your scrapbook is all about.

  • Scrapbook Album – there are many different colors, sizes and designs of albums that you could choose but, the one you purchase should be free from acid and lignin. These substances could cause damage to photos and memorabilia. A smaller album, say 8½” x 11” would help to keep the costs down and be much easier to fill. You could move to a larger album for future projects.

  • A Pair of Scissors – a good quality pair of sharp plain scissors is the basic requirement. There are some fancy scissors available such as ones with a patterned cutting edge but, they are not essential. If maintaining straight lines is a problem, then a straight edge cutter will solve it.

  • Adhesive – it is essential that you use photo-safe adhesives only. Using other adhesives puts your precious photos and other memorabilia at risk. Various glues and affixing options are available including, glue sticks, glue dots, two-sided tape, acid free photo tabs, and polypropylene corners.

  • Pen – to add your descriptions of what’s on the pages and what they are all about. This process is known as journaling. You cannot use any old pen however; it has to be one that does not ‘bleed’ where the ink soaks into the paper away from your writing causing a ‘blotchy’ look. A black pigma pen is a good choice.

What if you feel you would like some help choosing scrapbooking supplies for your first or subsequent scrapbooking album?

One way that many beginners opt for is a scrapbooking kit. They are available in a large range of themes like weddings, vacations, holidays, kids etc., so consequently you get a selection of co-ordinated scrapbook supplies to suit. If you feel your artistic skills are a little lacking, then a ready-made scrapbook kit may be just what you are looking for.

That’s all you need to create a simple scrapbook, so make a decision and actually start – NOW.
